Sustainable Minimally Packaged Eggs

(Via Trend Hunter)

As a society, not only do we waste a lot of food, be we also produce a lot of waste as a result of packaging foods. This is a simple, but potentially very impactful solution.

Heineken launches online innovation challenge to come up with new ideas for sustainable beer packaging.

Before you start, please be advised that local legislation unfortunately put restrictions on the ability to welcome ideas from all over the world.
For this particular innovation challenge, participation is therefore limited to a selection of countries and states only.

The challenge is open to all residents of the following countries: Austria, Brazil, Canada (excl. Quebec & Yukon), China, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Spain, UK & US (excl. California).

Product Fitness 80 at London’s Design Museum showcases a selection of redesigned Muji products that make us think twice about the basic concepts of package design.  Muji showcases products that reduce waste and energy consumption by an impressive 20%, in addition to addressing the issue of thoughtful package design.

I think we can learn a lot from this design-based concept especially in the healthcare industry.  Why are all pills packaged in the same way?  Does anyone read those little pieces of folded paper with 1 point font?  Is there a way to reduce packaging materials - thus reducing overall costs?  This is from a consumer perspective, but what about the medical packaging that goes into medical supplies for doctors?  At MSU’s School of Packaging, they are addressing just this.  Laura Bix, an associate professor at MSU says “Packaging design may address some of the most critical issues in healthcare”.  Having a better understanding and awareness of who the user is to your product, will create better design, and we have still yet to see this within the healthcare industry.

If you are interested in this concept of good design + healthcare, there was a recent event in Boston called the “Healthcare Experience Design Conference” - and they explore this concept to a greater degree.  Definitely worth the read!

Edible Packaging Lets You Drink A Beverage & Eat The Bottle Too
