THE FOOTBALL KIT THAT SCORES GOALS FOR SUSTAINABILITY
What it is:
Inspired in Portugal’s past and produced by Nike, the away kit of the Portuguese Football Team aims at conveying all the powerful symbolism of Portugal’s maritime history and the glorious age of Discoveries, as a means of urging the players to perform feats on the pitch that are at least as great as their ancestor performed on the seas.
But there is another Cool side to this, since it also represents a feat for Nike in the sustainability stakes, since the shirts are made 100% of polyester recycled from plastic bottles (each shirt using up to 13 bottles) and the shorts are 96% made of the same recycles polyester (and using up to 8 bottles, each).
Why it is Cool:
Because not only does it revive the spirit of the discoveries in a sporting sense, but also points the way to many to discover how important sustainability is for a better world by using one of the most powerful and aspirational meda in the world: top league football.
And also because it proves that sustainability should be seen more as a victory for the planet than just a goal.
